embossed effect on a Permasafe pack. the Permasafe container withstands the 121°c
cooking process used by Appel with no damage. it also delivers functional benefits to the consumer, such as allowing the food to be heated in the pack in the microwave. “Permasafe packaging is a perfect match for our
products. Modern and practical, it protects the high quality of our products,” says nicole Schmidt, Senior Product Manager at Appel. weidenhammer Packaging Group operates at 12
sites producing composite cardboard containers and injection moulded plastics packaging. Sales last year exceeded E220m. Austrian premium herb and spice supplier wiberg
also won an award in the sales packaging category for its latest rK spice box design, which combines a steel plate can with a functional plastic flip top closure, produced by Hessisch lichtenau, Germany-based G Junghans Kunststoffwaren-Fabrik. junghans manufactures a wide range of injection moulded dispensing closures and lids. the design developed for the wiberg container by leon widdison design of Germany incorporates a flip-up lid which opens to create a spoon from which the consumer can easily and conveniently sprinkle the contents into the dish they are preparing. Australian wine closure developer Zork, which was
acquired by US-based bag-in-box packaging group Scholle Packaging early last year, won an award in the design and labelling category for its latest SPK closure for sparking wines. the Zork SPK is described as a “peel and reseal”

closure that can be used on a standard glass sparkling wine bottle neck. the injection moulded design is said to provide ease-of-use, tamper-evidence, resealability and recyclability. it is already being used by a number of sparkling wine producers in Australia. the SPK closure comprises four components: a
robust, tamper-evident injection moulded cap that holds the closure on the wine bottle; a moulded collet that locks onto the bottle and is easy to open and reseal; an inner metal foil that provides
long term co2 barrier performance; and a flexible seal. Said to provide the same storage
lifetime as conventional cork closures, the
SPK design is suitable for application on standard bottling systems and can be produced in a range of standard or custom

colours. it can also be embossed in the mould. in line with the focus on functionality rather than
branding, the German packaging awards also recognise innovations that are yet to reach the market and the 2011 awards include two novel dispensing closure designs. developed by Starnberg, Germany-based phar-
maceutical packaging specialist Packsys, Globuli is a novel new closure that offers precise volumetric dispensing of liquid droplets. the system can be adapted to suit a wide variety of container and droplet sizes and offers features such as minimal risk of contamination, tamper-evidence, ease of operation and the ability to refill.
Anheusen, Germany-based pharmaceutical packag-
ing company Remy & Geiser won an award for its simplified design for a pharmaceutical closure that combines one-hand flip-top opening with tamper- evidence and child resistance features. it is intended for syringe dosing applications.
