markets | european masterbatch How are europe’s masterbatch markets performing after the
global downturn? AMi surveyed the mood of the industry ahead of last year’sMasterbatch 2011 conference and found that recovering sales are creating new concerns
Monitoring movements in masterbatch
european demand for masterbatch picked up strongly through 2010 as the supply chain restocked and end- use sectors saw a substantial recovery in output. Producers reported substantial improvements in order volumes compared with 2009, particularly from the injection moulding sector. And that growth trend continued into 2011, albeit with some signs of slowing demand beginning to emerge over the summer. recovery was largely driven by Germany, which saw a particularly rapid recovery in demand. Poland also saw good growth. elsewhere, recovery was patchy with countries on the “fringes” of europe – everywhere from ireland to Greece – showing much weaker fundamen- tals. central and eastern europe also showed mixed results with Hungary and Bulgaria recording largely static demand, while romania showed growth.

while the volume of european business recovered, it did not mean that doing business was any easier for masterbatch producers. companies were faced with challenges due to the volatility of raw material pricing and the availability of resin, pigments and additives during 2010. But market discipline has largely been maintained by the sector since the downturn and stocks have remained low, so most masterbatch companies are in a better position to deal with a downturn in business should europe experience the “double dip” recession some observers are anticipating. the immediate outlook for the masterbatch industry
was addressed by Andrew reynolds of AMi at the company’s annual Masterbatch conference, which was held in Vienna last year. this analysis was based on interviewing a cross-section of the industry.
