packaging | round up A touch of glass

there’s one market at least where light-weighting is not top of the agenda – premium fragrances. in this specialist market, people want packag- ing that feels substantial. it is a market where duPont has had great success with its Surlyn ionomer resin and the company chose the Perfumes, cosmetics and design exhibition in Paris in decem- ber last year to show the latest innovations and applications. Heading the innovation list

was the linkx technology developed by italian company Bormioli luigi, which allows a glass container to be over- moulded with Surlyn to create striking visual effects. At the show, the company displayed a new fragrance bottle conceived by French specialist design group QSld that encases a twisted-shaped glass bottle in a block of tinted Surlyn. “the choice of charcoal

grey for the Surlyn outerlayer was obvious for the mood and type of design we wanted to create, and we found gold to be the best colour to enhance this

smoky effect,” says christophe Guichard, QSld President. “one of the amazing possibili- ties is the ability to create two contrasting shapes, each of them decorated differently.” the process technology –

called Surlyn 3d – has been developed by Bormioli luigi and duPont together with specialist italian cosmetics moulder Pibiplast. it utilises Bormioli’s proprietary Sparkx glass formulation, which is said to be stronger, more durable and higher clarity than conventional glass grades and well suited to full or partial overmoulding. “the glass provides high

resistance to chemicals and alcohol and a luxurious sense of weight, while the shell made of Surlyn can be used to magnify, enhance and durably protect the visual effect of the bottle, as well as rendering it far less susceptible to breakage or damage,” says Bormioli luigi marketing manager corrado lusetti. Another innovative

application of the Surlyn resin

was shown in a closure produced to package the latest Paciotti branded fragrance from italian perfume maker weruska & joel. each closure features a gold-coloured Pc/ ABS dagger – the logo of the Paciotti luxury goods business – embedded within a block of Pc2000 grade Surlyn resin. the closures were moulded by luxury cosmetics packaging manufacturer G candiani, which is based at tradate in italy. company owner carlo candiani says Surlyn’s proven ability to reproduce thick glass-like parts without sinking or voids meant it was the only material considered for the application. Surlyn is also used to

produce the closure for Yve Saint laurent’s Beauté male fragrance. Produced by French processor Auriplast, part of the Qualipac group, the part features walls up to 23mm thick and is moulded using a two step technique. the closure carries a frosted moulded-in YSl logo on the top surface, which is produced with no post-moulding finishing. duPont’s Surlyn Pc grades

are optimised for appearance critical applications such as cosmetics and perfumes. ❙ www.dupont.comwww.bormioliluigi.comwww.pibiplast.itwww.gcandiani.comwww.qualipac.fr

Picasso provides visible security

Astra Plastique’s Picasso three-colour flip- top sports closure has been selected by nestlé for use across its european water brands. nestlé says one of the key factors in the

selection of the new closure was its integral tamper-evident band, which is inaccessible until the closure is opened and cannot be circumvented. the intact tamper-evident band is

clearly visible beneath the translucent PP body of the closure. the first time the closure is opened the tamper bridges are

broken and the lower section of the band drops to the base of the spout, providing an obvious visual indicator. A further benefit of the new design is that the ring remains retained in the closure, reducing the risk of littering. the Picasso closure also incorporates a 180˚ flip-top with a positive click closing action. it is available with and without a silicone valve.
