County bagging
MAG members Peter and Janice Arkulisz have visited every county in Britain, a project that began with Janice having to learn to ride
On my 40th birthday Peter my husband announced I was to learn to ride a motorbike. So it was that I was booked in for my CBT at 7.30am on a freezing February morning. I hadn't had a bicycle as a kid and seven hours later when all the blokes got their certificates I was told to come back for an extra two hours as I wasn't up to scratch.
I failed my 1st test with 16 faults and the instructor told Peter to buy me a bike and come back in 12 months. When I returned 12 months later it was obvious he hadn't expected to see me again with my own £600 Kawasaki KH125. Two weeks later I passed. Meanwhile my Auntie had told me to accept the fact that I was a crap driver and that I would never pass. This was just what I needed to get my
determination up, so having sworn I would never go out of Halifax, I found myself one day at a border. I screeched to a halt and did a U turn but Peter had a camera and took my first ‘County Bagging Photo’, he also pointed out that as I was now at the other side of the road and I could have a photo coming back into West Yorkshire. I then set off on what has become a 10 year adventure, bagging every county in Britain and riding to John O'Groats and Lands End.
I have now ridden about 16,000 miles and am on my 5th bike which is a Suzuki SV650. It can be difficult to get photo's as some border signs are situated at awkward spots for stopping. Some are on dual carriageways, or by double yellow lines, roundabouts or at traffic lights
and bus stops. Peter sometimes had to get off his bike so we had an action shot of me riding past the sign when there was no option for posing. I have had fun with the camera on a tri-pod using a 10 second delay with
buses and lorries getting in the shot. I have had members of the public and the police taking my photo and once had to ride with police permission into a bus shelter as it was the only angle I could get the sign in the photo. I
