tradenewstradenewstradenewstradenewstradenewstradenews Metzeler Roadtec real world test
Paddy Tyson covers many thousands of miles in the course of his MAG business and believes in getting value out of his tyres
There's an awful lot of time spent down the pub talking about tyres; best mileage, best in the wet, best for turn in, yada yada yada. We all ride different machines and we ride them in different ways, so our requirements vary, but now and again, I end up with a tyre that I'm happy to defend over a pint.
Three months ago I got a pair of Metzeler Roadtecs and they've just managed 10,200 miles, which for me, ticks the first box; they can do the mileage.
OK, I admit that when I rolled into TW
Tyres in Rugby there was a rather shiny bit showing through the middle of the rear tyre, so perhaps ten thousand was a little excessive, but it was only when they were really near the end, did they start to 'track' ruts in the roads or white lines, which demonstrated to me just how stable they had been. It's a shame that when a tyre does
something really well, you don't notice! So that leaves grip; how did they do?
Well, our esteemed Editor will probably be horrified to learn that shaving weight off various parts of the undercarriage was a sheer joy. Grip in the wet was fine too, but the only noticeable issue, if it is an issue, is that they are susceptible to changes in tarmac. Exiting a corner or roundabout over a change in surface you can feel the corner tighten or widen almost instantly as the grip level varies. It's subtle and not worrying, but if anything, demonstrates just how hard modern tyres work, especially over inconsistent road surfaces. Would I get another pair? Oh definitely. Did I? No. TW Tyres didn't have any on the shelf and I really wasn't in a position to wait, so I've got some Michelins now, enabling a direct comparison.
