Met police trial Zero electric motorcycle
London's Met Police have taken delivery of a Zero Dual Sport electric motorcycle for testing.
The Zero DS will be evaluated by the 'Motorcycle Tasking Team' at its roadside tasking sites and will also be using it for law enforcement purposes. The Zero DS has a claimed top speed of 80mph and a range of 112-miles, it costs around £7,500. Mick Cheeseman, Sergeant in
the Motorcycle Tasking Team for the Met, said, “Much of our work is about giving advice on keeping motorcyclists safe on London’s roads, and being able to do this on an electric motorcycle means we can reduce our impact on the environment. The Zero DS is a technologically advanced machine and we look forward to trialling it to see how it can be used as a daily part of our police business”.

Winter. Yumm. Cold hands, or perhaps not? In preparation for the inevitable, I decided it was time to fit a set of heated grips, because lobbying doesn't wait until the weather improves. Daytona Heated Grips are designed to keep hands warm throughout the journey and have a special ‘start’ function, so when switched on they warm up quickly. Once up to temperature, the second setting provides continual warmth. Of course you can always switch it back to 'start' at any point if you need extra heat. To be honest, calling the settings hot and warm, might be more logical. Either way, I really miss having a light on the switch, as the nights are so long now, it's always a matter of feeling for the switch, which isn't great and the tiny red light that used to glow on my Honda, was
really handy. You may ask, why not have the switch right beside the switchgear? Well, that brings me to fitting: Even though the Daytona blurb claims. ‘Simple to fit and supplied with specific instructions covering Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki & Yamaha wiring... Daytona Heated Grips come complete with everything needed to install. I beg to differ. The length of cable supplied doesn't permit siting the switch just anywhere unfortunately and I'm really glad that I got TWS Vehicle Wiring (01793 327 598) to fit them, because they didn't come with a fuse either. Perhaps I got the wrong ones, but my Bandit throttle tube also had to be 'trimmed' to enable the grip to fit.
Moaning aside, they really do the job. The switch isn't the easiest to use with winter
gloves, but it's no major problem to switch between hot and warm at regular intervals as the journey progresses. I had to do a quick trip from Carmarthen to Tyneside last week and I have to say, they were a Godsend, and worth the £59.99 price.
