ROAD TO THE I

t had been a frustrating fi rst season in the Pac-12

for Utah, which lost its fi rst four Conference outings and its quarterback to a season- ending injury. But the Utes picked up their fi rst Pac-12 win by downing Oregon State 27–8 in Salt Lake City in week nine. They did it behind running back John White, who carried the ball 35 times for a career- best 205 yards. Utah’s victory was big

for the historical record and bolstered the Utes’ bowl hopes, but it had little bearing on the race in the Pac-12 South. Two games that did: No. 23 Arizona State pummeled Colorado 48–14, and UCLA beat California 31–14. In Tempe, Brock Osweiler passed for two touchdowns and Cameron Marshall rushed for three scores as the Sun Devils built a 21–0 lead in the fi rst quarter and coasted to victory. At the Rose Bowl, quarterback Kevin Prince rushed for 163 yards and running back Derrick Coleman scored three touchdowns in the Bruins’ win.

John White AROUND THE PAC-12

Stanford remained unbeaten—this time in dramatic fashion. The fourth-ranked Cardinal trailed for the fi rst time all season, but overcame a 10-point, second-half defi cit and beat No. 20 USC 56–48 in three overtimes in Los Angeles. . . . Oregon also remained perfect in Pac-12 play. Washington State put up a fi ght, but fell 43–28 in Eugene. . . . Washington stayed alive in the North, too. The Huskies fell behind visiting Arizona 31–28 early in the fourth quarter, then got two touchdown runs from Chris Polk to win 42–31.

THREE PICKS

Redshirt freshman safety Tevin Mc- Donald equaled a school record when he intercepted three passes in UCLA’s victory over California. He was named the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Chris Polk earned Conference honors on offense after gain- ing 244 yards from scrimmage—144 on the ground and 100 catching passes—to lead Washington past Arizona. The special-teams nod went to Eric Whitaker, who kicked six extra points and two fi eld goals in Stan- ford’s thriller over USC.
