ROAD TO THE
olorado and Utah may be new to the Pac-12 in 2011, but that doesn’t mean their old rivalries are gone. Both schools won games against their long-standing in-state
foes in week three. The Buffaloes gave rookie coach Jon Embree his fi rst victory with a 28–14 win over Colo- rado State in Boulder. Running back Rodney scrimmage, and quarterback Tyler Hansen and ran for two more, including the clinching left. That capped a 16-play, 85-yard drive
than 10 minutes of the fourth quarter. Utah didn’t need
any such late-game heroics in Provo in its annual game against BYU. The Utes went ahead 14–10 late in the fi rst half, then scored 40 unan- swered points in the second half to win in a rout, 54–10. John White rushed for 174 yards and three second-half touchdowns for the Utes, but the big story was their defense. Utah forced seven turnovers, including six on fumbles.
Rodney Stewart AROUND THE PAC-12
Sixth-ranked Stanford faced its fi rst big test of the season and aced the exam with a 37–10 win over Arizona in Tucson. Stepfan Taylor rushed for a career-best 153 yards for the Cardinal. . . California thumped Presbyterian 63–12 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, the Golden Bears’ temporary home while Memorial Stadium in Berkeley is being renovated. The victory was the 75th for Cal’s Jeff Tedford, making him the winningest coach in school history…USC joined Stanford and Cal at 3–0. The Trojans beat visiting Syracuse 38–17.
