SEPTEMBER 24 A
ROAD TO THE
rizona State had lost to USC 11 consecutive years, so when the streak fi nally ended with a 43–22 victory in Tempe in week four, the Sun Devils partied like it was 1999.
“That’s a lot of weight on the shoulders if you think about,” head coach Dennis Erickson said after the game. Arizona State shed inside its 30-yard tion that lineback- sealing touchdown
that weight by forcing four turnovers, including three line. The last of the USC miscues was an intercep- er Shelly Lyons returned 41 yards for a game-
in the fourth quarter. Erickson’s squad dominated early, with Cam- eron Marshall racing 70 yards for a touchdown on the fourth play of the game, and Brock Osweiler passing for two touchdowns. The Trojans rallied from a 15-point defi cit to take a 22–21 advantage midway through the third quarter before two more scoring runs by Marshall helped lift Arizona State to its third victory in four games. Though it was only their Pac-12

HE’S BAAAAACK!
While Oregon split its fi rst two games in 2011, running back LaMichael James showed little of the form that made him a Heisman Trophy fi nalist in 2010. But the next two weeks, James rushed for 488 yards, including a school-record 284-yard outburst at Arizona to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. Arizona State linebacker Shelly Lyons won the defensive honor for his big interception return to help beat USC. Oregon State’s Jordan Poyer, who returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown against UCLA, was the Special Teams Player of the Week.
