Old Main is the university’s original building; it was completed in 1891 and is still in use by students. . . . Alumnus Brian Schmidt shared the 2011 Nobel Prize for Physics for his fi ndings about the expansion of the universe. . . . Pulitzer
Prize-winning
The Original
Old Main, which was completed in 1891, once was the only building on campus. It still houses the Dean of Students and Career Services, and remains a popular gathering place.
Native American writer N. Scott Momaday was a UA Regents Professor of English. . . . Arizona’s faculty includes six MacAr-
thur Fellow award-winners in fi elds as diverse as linguistics, opti- cal science, and anthropology. . . .The massive World of Words project at UA’s Department of Education promotes cultural understanding through children’s literature. . . . In 2001, UA students built a solar-powered car that won the American Solar Challenge. . . . UA softball teams have won eight national championships. . . . The bell from the USS Arizona, sunk dur- ing the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, was rescued from the scrap heap and now hangs on the UA campus. . . . UA is home to the collection of the American Vaudeville Museum. . . . “Bear Down!” is a rally cry for Arizona fans. Why? They were the fi nal words of 1926 football captain But- ton Salmon, as he lay dying from injuries suffered in a car accident. . . . Arizona sports teams got their nick-
name of Wildcats after a 1914 football game. The team lost the game, but a California sportswriter wrote, “They fought like wild- cats.” . . . The original school colors? Sage and silver.
