jogscotlandmagazine Summer 2011
thewarm-up by Alistair Currie The countdown has started ...
To what you may ask... the London Olympics...?Well that’s about 420 days by the time you receive this issue of Stride. The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow...? That’s in about 1,150
days. No, neither of those is what I’m talking about it, it’s the countdown to this year’s jogscotland 5k Challenges series and the good news is you only have to wait weeks for them, not years, plus anyone can take part! Starting onWednesday 8 June at Haddo Country Park in Aberdeenshire we move round the country taking in Inverness, Dryburgh (Borders), Glasgow and Edinburgh before finishing off in Dundee onWednesday 29 June. Six venues in 22 days with over 4,000 participants of all ages and backgrounds – that’s what the Challenges are all about! They are all midweek evening events, on Tuesdays andWednesdays, and as well as the 5k runs for anyone over the age of 11 there are also junior fun runs of between 1 and 1.5k for under 11s. So, if you haven’t signed up yet, then what are you waiting for... no, seriously, what are you waiting for! Go to page 24 for full details on how to sign up and check out
www.5kchallenges.org.uk to enter online.
Affordable, achievable and fun
Let’s be honest, just about everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment and sometimes taking part in organised running events can seem a little bit of a luxury, why pay good money to run round somewhere that you can probably run for free at other times, but that’s not the point is it... well, hopefully not! Taking part, and more importantly, preparing for a race or organised event can make the difference between keeping up your fitness regime and slumping back into the sofa to watch ‘Easties’ and ‘Corrie’... you are allowed to watch the goings on of the residents of E20 and M10, just do it after you run, you’ll enjoy it more... promise!
As part of our commitment to keeping things affordable we have kept our entry fees for the challenges at the same level as the past couple of years, that’s despite everything to do with staging the events costing more due to fuel costs, public spending constraints and other factors that Iwon’t bore you with now! There’s even a code on page 24 that will give you a discount of £1.50 off your entry fee, that’s 12.5
per cent off the standard £12 entry. For these who have been to a challenge event before you will know they are more than just a run round a lovely park or other such splendid location, there will be active warm-ups, music, fun and merriment galore ... and to finish off each night’s activities there is the now legendary lucky number random prize draw to win goodies from Run 4 It.
Our commitment to you
It’s not just the 5k challenges that are value for money, in everything we do we try our best to offer the highest possible level of service at low prices. Running, after all, is a simple activity ... as simple, in fact, as putting one foot in front of the other, so why over complicate the simple things in life? Take our membership for example, we made a commitment to offering a free level of membership in order to break down barriers to participation, and over the years more than 20,000 of you have taken up the free membership at Bronze level. To enable many more people, and by many we hope that is tens of thousands, to get active through jogscotland we introduced the new Bronze-plus category of membership. Bronze-plus means that after a year of free membership where you receive printed copies of Stride sent direct to your letterbox you will pay a small annual fee of £5 to continue getting Stride in printed format. If, however, you wish to read the online digital version for free you can drop down to Bronze- digital and your membership will continue to cost you nothing for as long as you stay active. Going up to Silver and Gold isn’t a lot either, just £15 for Silver and £27 for Gold, with potential benefits at each level worth much more than the cost. We’ve been working hard on improving our service to you, our members, and a part of that is our new website, which hopefully you will have seen by now. Soon the website will have a new easy to use membership login where you will be able to check and update all your details, find out more about the different levels and upgrade to the membership of your choice.
I’ll be at all the 5k Challenge events in June so I really hope to see you there taking part! Stop by and say hello if you get the chance.
Keep on running! The jogster
