The Great Scottish Run on Tour

As all jogscotties know, setting a running goal doeswonders for your motivation levels and training routine, as In Demand Scotland DJ Romeo has found out…

The Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run is Scotland’s largest mass participation sporting event, attracting a range of first timers, charity runners, elites and celebrities.

And this year, In Demand DJ Romeo will take to the starting line of the half marathon. As his first ever running event, he needed some pointers, and who better to put him through his paces than jogscotland!

In the space of one week Romeo toured Scotland to train with local jogscotland groups for his upcoming race debut.

From Aberdeen, to Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Galashiels, the In Demand team saw Scotland at its very best thanks to local jogscotland groups who showed off their local area and put Romeo and his listeners through their paces.

Kicking off in Aberdeen, the jogscotland Rosemount atWestburn Tennis Centre group took Romeo on a scenic riverside jog along the banks of the River Dee.Next up was Dundee – Scotland’s sunniest city, where Baxter Park played host to a small but enthusiastic group of runners, including one listener who came along as part of his army training!

In Edinburgh, the sun kept shining for the runners who came along to the city’s Inverleith Park where Jog Leader Andrew Jeske led a fartlek session.

Despite the rain, the Glasgow leg of the tour attracted an eager group ofWest Dunbartonshire jogscotties at Radio Clyde.

Moira Donohue was there on the night, she said: “The run along the canal was good fun and made even better having Romeo and George Bowie from Radio Clyde running alongside us!”

FellowWest Dunbartonshire jogscottie Pat Currie also enjoyed the session, she said: “I was very impressed with Romeo's enthusiasm, both for the jogging group and running in general.

“On the route we saw a pair of swans on the canal with the tiniest cygnets I have ever seen, just tiny fluffy balls! It just goes to show that it’s not all about jogging, but what you see and learn on the way too.”

For the grand finale, the tour visited the workplace jogscotland group the Tweedbank Trawlers in Galashiels for a Friday afternoon jog along the River Tweed.

Judging by the reaction of the groups, Romeo fared well on his jogging tour. He said: “I had a great time on my Great Scottish Run Tour. I met some lovely people who were a great motivation. I never knew running could be so sociable!

“The jogscotland Jog Leaders couldn’t have been more helpful and showed me some useful techniques, plus they had beautiful routes planned and were very encouraging.

“The great thing about jogscotland is that people from all levels can take part from complete beginners to seasoned athletes and everyone is catered for with no pressure. With the tips and techniques I picked up, I feel more confident for the Great Scottish Run in September.

“I had a great week and will definitely be getting involved with more jogscotland groups in preparation for my big run!”

If you missed the tour, don’t panic! There is still plenty of time to train up for the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run 10k or half marathon, check out www.jogscotland.org.uk for full training plans.

The early bird rates close on Friday 24 June, so don’t miss out, visit www.runglasgow.org for full details and to enter online.
