doing the exercises and believe it will help with my jogging long term and, most importantly, help prevent injury.”
Peterhead jogscotland members have been delighted that their local jogging group has provided them with a cross-training option outwith their jogging sessions.
Sheila Murray has been enjoying attending the sessions. She said: “I really feel it is helping my core strength and making me a better jogger.”
Classmate Liz McIntosh couldn’t agree more. She said: “It’s a nice change from jogging and it works different muscles, so in turn I’ve noticed that my posture seems to have improved whilst I’m out jogging.”
Jog Leader Jillian Clark has also noticed improvements in her running performance, particularly her strength.
So why is Pilates so good for runners? Class instructor Suzie Crane explained: “Pilates really helps to improve core strength which in turn helps in all sports, but it is especially beneficial for joggers and it is really good to balance strength and flexibility with cardiovascular exercise.”
As well as improving flexibility and balance, running builds long, strong muscles and opens up the vertebrae in the lower back which can help to prevent common back injuries which can result from the constant impact involved in running. The emphasis on good posture also
helps runners run tall and move smoothly through each stride.
Jog Leader Caroline McDougall runs fitness studio Tangerine 13 in Glasgow. As well as offering customers the opportunity to sign up to jogscotland groups, Tangerine 13 Studios also holds Pilates classes.

“Overall they find that Pilates rebalances the biomechanics of the body for running, in other words it improves flexibility in the muscles that tend to tighten and strengthens the muscles that are prone to weakness in runners. Not only does this reduce the risk of injury but practicing Pilates also improves running performance.
“One of our clients in particular suffered from lower back pain and had to stop running altogether but after a few months of Pilates, her back and core has strengthened and the hamstrings and hip flexors realigned and she now runs longer and faster than she did before.
“Another one of our clients had constant knee pain and found that Pilates improved his gait by encouraging good alignment of the hips, knees, ankles and feet.”
