x-training Pedal Oot
Jogging on a bike? It’s not as crazy as it sounds according to Grangemouth jogscotland!
Over the past few months, Grangemouth jogscotland have taken jogging to a new level! Since they were formed in 2003, the group has constantly been striving to keep their jogscotties motivated – and this year they felt the time had come to branch out and so, the ‘Pedal Oot’ concept was born.
The Pedal Oots are leisurely bike outings for the Grangemouth joggers, taking on routes which are as flat and traffic free as possible. As Falkirk is the home of two of Scotland’s key waterways (the Forth and Clyde Union Canals) this has not proved too problematic!
After a pedal (oot) one way, the peddlers enjoy some food and a rest at a suitable establishment at the half way point. As all jogscotties know, it is important to get a spot of socialising, brunch and a quick posing session for photos (in this case in helmets and ‘padded breeks’) when out and about!
Jog Leader, and the brains behind the Pedal Oot concept, Bob Moyes said: “The purchase of staple items from our quality Scottish diet, such as bacon butties and black pudding rolls, make the early Sunday morning trip very worthwhile for our members! Following such a feast it is perhaps not surprising that the return journey is somewhat quicker than the journey out.

“If the ‘posing’ can be combined with a bit of sunshine and impressing the locals en route with our commitment to exercise on a Sunday morning, then so much the better!
“One of our group members, ‘Eleanor the Weather’, has been working wonders for most of our Oots, impressing all with her obvious connections to someone high above!”
Fortunately, the group has only had one sunshine free trip so far, and even this Oot was undertaken with enthusiasm and everyone arrived at breakfast, mud splattered but in one piece.
Bob continued: “On this occasion, the more well brought up pedal ooters offered to stand while consuming their recovery calories, but the very nice waiter insisted our rather dirty rear ends should rest on the freshly laundered arm chairs!”
During the worst of the weather at the start of the year, two Oots were cancelled as it was deemed that peddling alongside a canal with out of control handlebars would not be particularly sensible.
With emphasis on fun and banter, Grangemouth jogscotland have certainly captured the essence of a jogscotland session, but on a bike! All ages are welcome and the pace is leisurely and definitely not competitive.
Grangemouth jogscotland is alive and kicking in Central Scotland, so why not join in, be it pounding the pavements or pedaling the paths – or both!
