Special Report Egypt on the way to recovery

Jo Austin talks to Sherif Lotfy, ceo Moby Dick Solutions S.A.E in Egypt about the effects of Egypt’s uprising on his airline catering business

How did you and the Moby Dick Solutions team manage during the days of the revolution in Hurghada? Lotfy: The positive effect we

experienced was that it brought the company even closer together. I am proud of how well we all pulled through as a unit to find solutions during the crisis.

How did the situation affect your company? Team morale has been boosted by the solidarity shown during the crisis. We were already a close-knit ‘family’, but the way we rallied round to support and care for each other shows that we have an asset, in terms of team-spirit, which is worth more than the revenue we lost (down by 92%) due to the crisis.

Was Moby Dick running its internal operation during the whole period? Our operation never stopped. We found a way around all kinds of obstacles, including when the internet in Egypt was blocked, to keep running as close to normal as possible.

How is your operation running now? We are fighting back by re-organising our team and innovating ways to reduce costs. However, this will not involve staff layoffs as every member has played a vital part in Moby Dick’s success and will do so in the future. I cannot play without all of my team! Are there any changes to be expected in your pricing policy? Despite the inflationary cost pressures due to the external international environment, we will do our

utmost to keep our prices to a minimum. As always, we never compromise on the quality of service to our clients, to whom we give our sincere thanks for their co-operation during these challenging times.

What are the major challenges for the airline industry and the wider economy in Egypt now? The revolution has provided the industry with a wonderful opportunity to flourish in the long-run. I am sure that Egypt will become a more business- friendly environment. If we can embrace this outstanding solidarity as we meet the challenges ahead, the Egyptian economy can recover well this year. One comment regarding the tourists: we can’t wait to welcome back our international friends!
