Bateen for business
Al Bateen Executive Airport, Abu Dhabi Airports Company’s (ADAC) dedicated business aviation airport in the Middle East, has joined with gategroup to provide catering and aircraft provisioning services to business aircraft using the airport. Under a proposed long-term agreement, a new kitchen will supply gourmet meals and other hospitality-related services. Al Bateen Executive Airport is witnessing rapid growth in traffic from home-based operators and visiting aircraft. It handled almost 8000 aircraft movements in 2010, an increase of more than 30 percent over the previous year. Airport general manager Stephen Jones said: “The establishment of a bespoke business aviation caterer is the first of many initiatives we will put in place to ensure that Al Bateen becomes the business airport everybody wants to fly to.” ADAC has already invested US$50 million in turning the 50-year-old military airport into a luxury business aviation gateway with an impressive VVIP passenger terminal.

Gluten-free cruising
In a new partnership with the Coeliac UK association, MSC Cruises is offering a 10 per cent discount per cabin based on double occupancy to members of the association. Coeliac disease affects about one in 100 people
in the UK; it is the most common form of wheat intolerance. Recognising the needs of sufferers, gluten-free meals are available in all restaurants on MSC Fantasia, MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia, MSC Musica, MSC Splendida and MSC Magnifica on Mediterranean and Northern Europe routes. All are created in association with the Italian Coeliac Association and prepared by specially trained staff. On MSC Lirica, MSC Opera, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Melody, guests can find pre-packaged gluten- free products such as snacks, biscuits, croissants, sponge cakes and muffins. The discount will be valid for one year on all MSC Cruises’ Mediterranean and Northern Europe departures.

Joint venture
The proposed UK-only joint venture between Alpha Flight Group and LSG Lufthansa Service Holding had reached the memorandum-of- understanding stage as we went to press. The proposed venture, in which Alpha and
LSG will be equal partners, will include all existing Alpha and LSG Sky Chefs airline catering, airline retail and ancillary services in the UK, with the exception of Alpha’s dedicated British Airways operation at London-Gatwick and its Irish operations. The joint venture will be carried on by a new company with anticipated combined revenues of around 330 million GBP. Finalisation and timing for establishment of the joint venture is subject to anti-trust approvals from the European Commission and approvals or acceptable clearances by the relevant authorities as well as final approval by the parent boards of Alpha and LSG. Until such approvals have been received, both organisations will continue to operate as normal.
