Feature: Trolleys
Weighing in at just 16 kg (35 lb), it is claimed
to be the lightest in the industry with a 25% weight reduction over conventional aluminum trolleys, giving airlines a significant payload reduction and major fuel savings. Said Willem ten Barge, AeroCat commercial director: “ “We saw a need for an all-plastic catering trolley that would offer airlines many more attractive advantages than the current offering. Plastics opened up a range of new possibilities in terms of weight reduction, aesthetics, improved logistics, and significant cost savings.” The essentially all-plastic design, except for some small parts, facilitates closed-loop recycling after the trolley’s estimated 10-year lifetime, giving major fuel savings. Everything but the wheels can be recycled. Aerocat has now moved on to launch the
Eazyway trolley leasing system designed to help airlines reduce costs in terms of catering while caring for the environment. The business model enables airlines to acquire trolleys on a
buy-leaseback option which includes the phased replacement of obsolete metal trolleys with the Tigris plastic trolley. According to AeroCat, the Eazyway leasing programme can reduce inventory up to 20% through better asset management using RFID tracing and monitoring. Routine maintenance is also included.

operators. The trollley is made of modern ‘train friendly’ rotary moulded plastics with clearly visible product displays, a digital media screen for animated advertising, and an integral hot water system. The dimensions make the trolley extremely manoeuvrable and successful trials on-board Southern Trains and South West Trains in the UK have drawn praise from staff and customers alike. The trolley has been developed in partnership
with London-based design agency The Yard Creative and will be going into production in the early months of this year (2011). Onboard Logistics in conjunction with Sovereign On Line has also launched a new catering trolley designed to increase sales and
