A time of stark contrast

Recent events in Japan have put everything we do into perspective. We have made contact with our industry colleagues in the country and are relieved to hear from Hideo Miyabe and Tim Zandbergen of TFK, Sze Hunn of Japan Airways

and Kazuyuki Morooka of Cosmo Catering. We send them and everyone living in this dignified country our sincere wishes for a speedy return to normality. Unrest across the Arab nations has also hit the headlines and we hear from one

of Egypt’s airline caterers about the effects of turmoil on the industry (page 74). Meanwhile, we are seeing an improving economic climate in the airline industry

with many full flights being sold at full fares. Investment in IFE, connectivity and new cabins is taking place across the world as passenger numbers are predicted to increase, particularly in the Asian market. This issue brings a report from a hugely successful ITCA in Nice which attracted

a record number of airline visitors. We also feature the Mercurys and congratulate this year’s worthy winners. Innovation comes in all shapes and sizes and Cathay Pacific’s new Business

seat configuration will be one to watch. We talk to the designers behind British Airways’ new First and follow the brief for the airline’s successful all-Business service from London City Airport into New York JFK. In this packed issue we also review the new range of lightweight airline trolleys and test out the latest noise reducing headphones.
