Tantalum production gets back on track
Tantalumproducer, Global Advanced Metals, is reopening itsWodgina and Greenbushes operations inWestern Australia. The sites, said to be the world’s largest known tantalumresources, were placed on care andmaintenance during the global financial crisis in 2008 when there was also an increasing amount of conflictmaterial entering the supply chain fromthe Democratic Republic of Congo.
At full strength, the operations are
capable of producing a third of the world’s supply at 1.4million lbs of tantalum pentoxide per annum. The initial restart however will produce half this, at 700,000 lbs per annum. Chief executive officer, Bryan Ellis, said:
“There has been strong growth in all sectors of tantalumdemand and stockpiles are rapidly diminishing. We have also been supportingmajor electronics companies and international government efforts to remove conflict minedmaterial fromthe supply chain. Consumers do not want non-ethical materials in their products and it is essential that the tantalumindustry supports all efforts to remove it fromthe supply chain.”
