Historically, the choices for procuring electronic components were either buy direct fromOEMs, via catalogue houses, franchised distributors or brokers.With strengths and weaknesses for each of these avenues, customers had to compromise on areas such as service or product lead-times.
Given this backdrop, Rebound’s hybrid distribution concept is
said to blend all the benefits of the traditional sourcing methods, thus eliminating the need to compromise.
The concept requires commitment throughout the organisation
in order tomake it work. Rebound’s background was primarily as a broker, so the transition to a hybrid distributor began by setting out some criteria and defining strict procedures within the group.
A hybrid distributor can be defined as a company that offers all
of the following attributes. Itmust deliver quality product inside lead-time with a reliable supply of obsolete product. It should provide a total global view of pricing and availability with a secure source of OEMproduct. Not only should it be a global company
with local values, it should have a disciplined approach to purchase orders and provide comprehensive technical support with data and samples and the use of approved test facilities.
Rebound combined these criteria with its AS9120 and SC21
implementation as well as its regular supplier audits that define and categorise vendors and strict goods inwards procedures. This created a strong foundation on which to continue the company’s success.
