Editor, Cheryl Taylor talks to Jaana Jatyri, chief executive of trend forecasters,
Trendstop.com about their new footwear trend mobile app, as well as next year’s trends, apps and trend forecasting in general.
How does the trends forecasting business work? We analyze huge amounts of data, ranging from high concept art and fashion trends through to readily available content sources such as social media, news and product releases. Our global network of dedicated trend spotters cover street style, catwalk, stores, trade shows and uncover new research data daily. The mix of seasoned industry experts and passionate young talent in our teams gives our analysis a unique perspective on subculture cool, together with an understanding of how to extract the commercial elements of these trends, and how to translate them into viable products for mainstream markets.
Tell us about your sources of inspiration? It is completely global, and we look at absolutely everything to have enough information to produce with a reliable forecast. We look at all areas from young and up-and-coming designers and conceptual design to established retailers and brands. Our customers say part of our expertise is in translating the sometimes obscure concepts into commercially viable, clear design development ideas.
Your Catwalk Trend Overviews are now on iPad? Yes, both on our website and the iPad.
How do you rate the fashion shows? We present our catwalk overviews in Top 10 rankings for each city, based on the most important trends coming through from each city and the most noteworthy collections from the designers showing there. We rank trends across seven categories from each of the Fashion Week cities: Top 10 collections, Top 10 color trends, Top 10 surface design trends, Top 10 materials, Top 20 clothing trends, Top 10 key accessories and Top 10 footwear from Paris, Milan, New York and London each, resulting in 28 Top 10 rankings for the most in-depth catwalk trend analysis tool available to date.
What do you say about Colour? Our Catwalk Trend Edit app for the iPad contains four colour Top Tens, from Paris, Milan, London and New York. We present the top most important trend colours from each city, and explain how the colours have developed throughout the different cities. The app also contains galleries to browse through the colour images to show you all examples those colours, have been used, including footwear. What do you say about Footwear? Like the Colour Top Tens, our Catwalk Overviews include Footwear Top Tens, from Paris, Milan, London and New York. Each top 10 has eight images and of footwear close-ups representing the trend and our analysis of each of the ten trends.
We heard you have published a new footwear trend app? Yes, that’s right. Our Trendstop20 Spring/Summer 2011 Footwear Trends are available for the iPhone and Android phones.
