The spinning polyurethane stars in the Gyru-Star screening bucket produce quality topsoil whilst separating out stones and vegetation.

Avant add-ons

D60 & D75

Three more attachments have been developed for the versatile Avant Tecno compact loaders. Nick Johnson saw them in action at a recent demonstration day held near Cheltenham.

Two new hydraulically driven chipper attachments and a new Gyru-Star screening bucket have been developed by UK manufacturers for use on Avant Tecno compact loaders. The chippers are adaptations of proven GreenMech products, while the screening bucket has been produced by Gloucester-based Wheatway Solutions. All three were put through their paces at a demonstration organised by new Avant Tecno dealer, Ashlea Equipment Sales of Cheltenham. Run by John Brassington, Colin Smith and Jackie Warmingham, Ashlea now sells and supports Avant machines in Gloucestershire, west Oxfordshire and part of south Wales.

The smaller of the new GreenMech chipper attachments is the CS100H. Derived from the compact tractor based CS100TMP, this hydraulically powered implement has a maximum capacity of 100mm. At the demonstration it was fitted to a 980kg Avant 420 articulated loader whose 14.9kW (20hp) Kubota diesel engine provides sufficient power to provide a chipping capability of 75mm. Gravity-fed, it weighs 195kg and has a wide in-feed chute with a throat size of 315mm x 162mm. It has been developed to require a hydraulic oil supply of 31 to 36 litre/minute so that it was well matched to the auxiliary flow of the Avant host machine.

Power-fed chipper

Ashlea also displayed the new EC150H hydraulic drive wood chipper, coupled to an Avant 750 loader with a 36kW (49hp) Kubota V2403 engine. Derived from an EC150TMP compact tractor chipper, this power-fed attachment, with its patented Disc-Blade chipping/shredding system, weighs 490kg and has a 150mm chipping capability. It requires an oil flow rate of 66 to 70 litres/minute.

GreenMech MD Jonathan Turner says, “Producing hydraulic drive chippers is a new route for us.We originally trialled a chipper attachment on a small tracked loader, but the idea of tailoring units to work on wheeled Avant loaders developed from a conversation I had with Avant Tecno UK MD Jukka Vaattovaara at the Executive Hire

Show 2010.” Now the resulting CS100H will be displayed at this year’s Show, where both companies have stands.

The new screening bucket is the Gyru-Star 3-80, which is being developed by Colin Smith of Wheatway Solutions. Having had previous experience of selling screening buckets with the distinctive rows of yellow polyurethane stars, he decided to produce his own version for the Avant 420, and for 2500 to 3000kg mini excavators.

19 stars per rotor

The 800mm screen width implement, which has three rotors (each comprising 19 flexible, self-cleaning polyurethane stars), was on the Avant 420. This prototype had its rotors driven by a chain from the hydraulic motor, but production units should utilise a Gates carbon belt when they become available for sale very soon. The stars are rotated ‘uphill’, so that material rolls through the bucket rather than being chopped up. This arrangement scores over many conventional screening buckets, in that any roots and vegetation are retained in the bucket rather than passing through with the screened soil. This feature should prove particularly useful in removing problem roots, like those of the pernicious Japanese Knotweed.

When attached to the Avant 420, GreenMech’s CS100H chipper can deal with branches of up to 75mm diameter.

Although the soil being screened on the day was a little wetter than would

have been ideal, the bucket on the 420 was able to process the material without crushing it. The implement appears very able to produce high quality topsoil whilst retaining almost all the stone, concrete or brick fragments, plus vegetative matter.

Such has been the initial interest in the 3-80 on the 420 that a larger 4-100 version is being developed. It is to be displayed on a 21kW (28hp) Avant 630 loader at the Ricoh Arena, where it will be a significant Executive Hire Show launch.
