Wymondham I have been to every

Executive Hire Show. I go looking for new products and improvements to the equipment we already own. Adding new items

helps to keep us ahead of the competition and it provides something positive to talk about with our customers. I like to be able to talk to leading manufacturers at exhibitions and I am pleased that one of our important suppliers, Niftylift, will be at the 2011 Show. It is important that the hire industry has its own exhibition and that it is well supported directly by the main manufacturers.

Every time I have been to the Show I have come away with new ideas and have ultimately bought new equipment for the fleet. It is the only event genuinely focused on our specific industry, and it is organised by people who understand what we want. It’s always good to see new products and ideas. There are a lot of first-time exhibitors that I want to visit, including Endress, Shindaiwa and Volvo, and it will be a great opportunity to catch up with existing suppliers like Hilti and Youngman and see what they are launching. I’ll also call in to the stands of companies we speak to almost every week over the phone, such as Belle, Seddons, Sumner and The Hire Supply Company, and put faces to names. There’s no substitute for visiting the Show. Sales people might call to see us in the

office with brochures, and you can get basic product information over the Internet, but it’s not the same as actually being able to see and touch the equipment, and ask questions about it.

I went to the Show in 2010 for the first time, especially to inspect the new 515-40 compact telescopic handler that JCB was officially

launching at the exhibition. I liked what I saw and ordered six machines. As a first time visitor, I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised - the exhibition proved to be very interesting and I was

impressed by the event’s manageable size and its convenient car parking. At Rocket Rentals we are always on the lookout for new ideas and I certainly intend to go again.

The Show is an event I always look forward to. You get to see so many key suppliers at one time, in one place and you can enjoy a really full day seeing all the latest equipment. I’ll have a wish list of products I’ll want to consider during my visit, especially core equipment like cut-off saws, compaction plates and breakers. Like many other

hirers, we reined in our spending over the last couple of years, but

with signs of the market now recovering we need to ensure we have appropriate stocks to meet increasing customer demand. I’ll also be interested in examining closely the products in the Innovation Zone.

My fellow Director, Alan Ingold, and I have been to every Executive Hire Show and we attended the industry’s major exhibition when it was held in Wembley, Birmingham and Docklands. Coventry is a breeze to get to - probably easier than Wembley because the motorway links are usually very good. We go to the Show to make purchases. Our financial year ends at the end of February, so the timing is perfect. Last year we bought a Fairport Construction electric vibrating poker, and an Ifor Williams trailer, amongst other items. We also saw an innovative log splitter attachment for the Kanga mini loader that was promoted as a concept on the Red Band stand, and we bought one as soon as it was officially launched in the summer. Everything at the Show is directly relevant to our industry, and so all the stands will be of

interest. We’ll look at them all. The exhibition lets you see all the latest products and developments, and gives you an insight into future trends.
