News NEW FEDEX HUB IN COLOGNE


FedEx offi cially opened its new Central and Eastern Europe hub at Cologne Bonn Airport in late October, which also comes with strong environmental credentials, being the fi fth solar-powered facility in operation within the FedEx Corporation.


The new complex provides fast connectivity within Europe and rapid links to the US and Asia. The hub was previously in Frankfurt but was relocated to Cologne in June 2010, growing from 35 employees then to over 450 now.


“The Cologne facility will play a pivotal role in the FedEx strategy of strengthening and expanding its market position in Europe,” commented Gerald P Leary, president of FedEx Express Europe, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa. “Our new hub is testament to FedEx’s belief in the economic potential of the German marketplace and its ability to catalyse growth in Central and Eastern Europe.” The new hub’s roof has the largest FedEx Express solar power installation worldwide and, with an area of 16,000sqm is capable of producing about 800,000 kilowatt hours per year. It is one of the largest solar rooftop installations in North Rhine-Westphalia.


AIRASIA X CHOOSES CHRISTCHURCH AirAsia X will start serving New Zealand for the fi rst time in the fi rst quarter of 2011, favouring Christchurch on the South Island over the country’s capital, Auckland.


The deal was inked in early November and the new service is expected to bring in up to 70,000 more visitors a year and US$55 million to the local economy. Christchurch’s mayor, Bob Parker, applauded the new fl ight, saying: “Having this new airline truly positions Christchurch as New Zealand’s tourism hub.”


JetBlue will launch daily summer fl ights between Anchorage, Alaska, and Long Beach in May 2011. “During the peak summer travel months, Anchorage is in high demand for California residents,” said Scott Laurence, vice president of route planning for JetBlue Airways.

The November addition of three-times weekly services between Berlin and Dubai means that Air Berlin now operates scheduled year-round fl ights to the Middle East. “We have integrated the service to Dubai in our hub structure in Berlin and are able to offer connections to other cities in Germany, Scandinavia, Austria and Switzerland. Air Berlin is thereby offering an attractive product to business travellers as well as to holidaymakers,” said the airline’s CEO, Joachim Hunold. Commenting on Christchurch as AirAsia X’s fi rst New Zealand point, Azran Osman-Rani, the airline’s chief executive, said that its strong tourism appeal made it a good choice. “Christchurch Airport put up a great business case for why we should come south. We were impressed with the potential and the quality of tourism experiences available in the South Island,” he said. Christchurch International Airport CEO, Jim Boult added that the new route was a result of two years of negotiations with AirAsia X and the regional authorities.
