WORLD ROUTES SATURDAY NIGHT RECEPTION

World Routes 2010 Platinum Sponsor

>>>Belly dancing and Turkish hospitality got World Routes underway this year. ONE2ONE WITH SERVER AYDIN

the night away H

undreds of delegates attended Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport’s lively Saturday Night Reception, with many taking the opportunity to learn some belly dancing moves and everyone catching up with old friends

and colleagues. Routes News interviewed the airport’s chief commercial offi cer, Server

Aydin, in Vancouver before the Saturday Reception to fi nd out what sets his airport apart from the rest.

Why is Sabiha Gökçen growing so quickly? We are lucky in terms of our catchment area – we have 18 million people in our range and this population is historically under-served as the city’s other airport is more than 50km away. We have worked hard on our network connections and we are focused on helping airlines to make money. We are looking at opening destinations that earn good yields and where we can contribute to the airline’s planning with marketing and research and development (R&D) resources.

What makes your approach different? We are active in representing our airport and also our local airlines, such as Pegasus and SunExpress, at international events and we are always actively looking for new destinations that suit our airlines. We recognise that we need to join resources in this way. We also offer real marketing support, by which I mean R&D and technical and systems support.

What new destinations have you introduced recently? We have added 21 new destinations in the past year, including Barcelona, Brussels South Charleroi, Billund, Batumi, Grozny, Budapest, Tbilisi, Sophia and Kharkiv.

Do you have ambitions to have a long-haul network? Right now we are focused on getting our brand name into the European, North African, Middle East and CIS regions and becoming a hub for medium-haul traffi c. CIS countries are especially important for us from an ancillary revenue point of view. North Africa is also really interesting for us – Tunisia, Libya, Algeria and Sudan are on our radar.

NEW DOMESTIC SERVICES

The start of the winter season saw four new domestic destinations for Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen. AndoluJet launched three new domestic destinations with daily fl ights to Kayseri, six times weekly fl ights to Samsun and three weekly services to Sivas. Plus, Borajet has launched services to Denizli operating a 66-seat turboprop ATR 72 aircraft.

Why are you hosting the Saturday Night Reception? Routes has helped us a lot in recent years and it has been the main place for us to promote our brand and to communicate our messages to airlines. We have been at every Routes event since 2008 and most of our new airlines have been captured as a result of one of these events.
