>>> Three specialist industry conferences ensured that the major challenges facing cargo, tourism and passenger airline industries were debated and discussed.
O
nce again aviation is back in the spotlight following the attempted terrorist bomb plot targeting both cargo and passenger aircraft. This comes at a time when there is already major geographical discrepencies in the industry due to strong airline performance in Asia and Latin America, major improvements in North America but huge economic uncertainties in Europe. The ICAO/World Bank/Routes Global Aviation Strategy Summit (GASS) proved to be the perfect forum to bring together different aviation stakeholders to discuss these, and many other, industry challenges. High-level panelists, such as Girma Wake, outgoing CEO of Ethiopian Airlines and Robert Boyle, British Airway’s director strategy & business units, tackling subjects as diverse as bilateral environments, economic uncertainties and what lies ahead for the industry in the next decade, over two days.
Cargo also got a special focus with the new Air Cargo Week (ACW) Air Cargo Conference, which allowed cargo and freight experts to share ideas and engage in dialogue. Tourism and the economic impact of the air travel industry was also well-represented at the World Tourism & Air Services Summit (TAS), which tackled diverse topics, including asking whether low-cost carriers are the new charter airlines and how tourism organisations can harness the power of social media to their best advantage.
Routes Talks The Routes Talks Seminar Theatre was a new innovation at World Routes in 2010 and was the venue for a range of presentations and seminars from industry experts and academics, as well as press conferences and some Airline Requirement Briefi ngs. This venue had a high profi le in the Networking Village and was easily accessed by airport and airline delegates alike.
One of the well-attended sessions was the Start-up Carrier Session, presented by Shaun Monnery, chief commercial offi cer and director of aircraft leasing at Astraeus Airlines, who spoke on the challenges of setting up a new airline from scratch.
He pointed out that the overhead cost of setting up a new carrier is in the region of $2.7 million and that insurance costs for start-ups are 250% higher than established airlines.
Honourable minister Edmund Bartlett, minister of tourism at the Jamaica Tourist Board sat on the panel at TAS.
