Blades of glory

A

>>> British Columbia’s famous Rogers Arena, home to the Vancouver Canucks hockey team, was the setting for the glittering Gala Networking Event and Routes Airport Marketing Awards.

uckland, Brussels, Edmonton and Nairobi airports were entitled to a particularly good night of partying at the Gala Networking Event, having each picked up a 2010 World Routes Airport Marketing Award, which recognises excellence in route development, nominated by airlines.

“This award is an enormous reward for Brussels Airport, as only four years ago we were still suffering from the bankruptcy of Sabena in 2001. Today we have seen the entry of many long-haul carriers, as well as European and low-cost carriers. 2010 has been our best year ever with nine new passenger and cargo airlines and 17 new destinations,” said Leon Verhallen, head of aviation marketing. “What really sets these awards apart is how accurately they refl ect the airlines’ views. Vitally, it is the airlines’ votes that create the shortlist from which the panel selects the winners, and the judging panel itself is made up of airline route development professionals,” added David Stroud, senior vice president, Routes Events, who sat on the new judging panel made up of airline route planners and industry insiders. British Airways also had reason to celebrate after receiving The Orbis Social Responsibility Award for its partnership with Comic Relief, a UK-based charity.

Putting on a party!

Once the trophies were handed out, Vancouver and British Columbia put on a brilliant display of their city, province and country – proving why the Winter Olympic hosts were recognised around the world for their unbeatable hospitality during the world sporting spectacular earlier in 2010.

profi le through the evening with Trevor Linden, one of Canada’s most famous hockey players and retired captain of the Vancouver Canucks being master of ceremonies. Plus, giant ice hockey players, Duh Hockey Guys, put some delegates through their paces on the ‘ice’.

This was followed by a breathtaking dance and musical display showcasing British Columbia’s rich history and multicultural society, complete with a light display. That got everyone in the mood for some dancing of their own, and lively local band, Dr Strangelove, and the addition of fl ashing disco glasses ensured the celebrating went on well into the night.
