Magnifi cent Malta
Malta’s tourism industry has reinvented itself, attracting both Ryanair and easyJet in the process. Alex Coxon fi nds out what’s driving the island’s revival.

ituated 58 miles south of the Italian territory of Sicily and 179 miles north of Africa, the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta and its sister isles of Gozo and Comino are home to just 413,000 residents, yet welcome a staggering 1.29 million tourists every year. It isn’t hard to understand what drives visitors to the islands. With 87
miles of coastline nestled in warm Mediterranean waters, a year-round average temperature of 18ºC, and typically benefi ting from 5.5 hours of sunshine on a winter’s day and more than 12 during the summer, Malta has long been a favourite short-haul destination with European and Middle Eastern holidaymakers.
Yet it isn’t only the climate that attracts tourists. Despite being just 122 square miles in size, Malta is teeming with historical and archaeological gems, ranging from the megalithic Ggantija temples of Gozo – older than the Pyramids or Stonehenge – to the remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress cities of Valetta and Mdina on the main island.
