Antalya will be displaying the strength of its aviation market and year-round tourism offering at Routes Tourism Mediterranean next year. Lucy Siebert reports.
S
easonality is one of the biggest challenges facing Antalya on Turkey’s southern
Mediterranean coast, but when we visited this idyllic Mediterranean town in early October we found the airport’s terminals bustling with tanned and relaxed holidaymakers – mostly from Russia and Germany – who had been enjoying balmy temperatures in the range of 23 degrees Celsius. However, despite the crowds of passengers, the airport’s two general managers, Alexander Laukenmann and Ferda Yakar, explain that this sight is nothing compared to the type of traffi c the airport handles during the peak summer season.
“Russia and Germany are our main markets and we handle a huge number of tourists from these countries during the peak summer season,” says Laukenmann. Yakar adds: “Just one of our Russian airline operators, Transaero, has 10 B747 aircraft coming in at the same time of the day in the summer. We line these aircraft up outside the terminal and it is an impressive sight.” With the airport expecting to handle 25 million passengers in 2010, from 345 airline customers, it is clear that this destination is a major player on the domestic and regional Mediterranean aviation scene. “We are always perceived as a small tourist market but if our current growth
