Fit for New Theater Exhibit HP wide-format Designjet L25500 and HP PVC-free wallpaper provide quality and easy installation within budget
W
hen The Old Globe, a theater in San Diego, received a grant to create an exhibit on its history,
the organization began developing a visual timeline of iconic theatrical figure illustrations by costume designer Anna Oliver. The Old Globe then turned to local large-format print provider Quan- tum Digital Imaging to produce a high- quality exhibit with a difficult installa- tion that stayed within its budget. Using the HP Designjet L25500 printer and HP PVC-free wallpaper, (Booth 1200) Quantum Digital Imag- ing printed the timeline of detailed illustrations cost-effectively and with the quality demanded for a close-view application. Brett O’Connell, founder and owner of Quantum Digital Imag- ing, attributes the affordability of the wallpaper with helping his company meet the price point the theater need- ed—without sacrificing quality.
Competing with solvent “The HP Designjet L25500 and HP media enabled us to compete with the solvent market and accomplish the the- ater project within the budget and time- line,” says O’Connell. “Additionally, HP PVC-free wallpaper allowed us to offer a very cost-effective, simple-to- produce and easy-to-install product for customizable large-format graphics.” The printer’s HP Latex Inks and HP media options provide a solution that is helping Quantum Digital Imaging meet more of its customers’ applica- tion needs. Prints produced by the HP Designjet L25500 come off the printer completely dry, adding efficiency. In the past, Quantum Digital Imaging needed to laminate printed media and apply wallpaper paste. HP PVC-free wallpaper, however, is pre-pasted, self- adhesive, and requires no lamination. “We’re able to offer more products because we can simplify production. The wallpaper is ready to install right off the printer,” adds O’Connell.
According to the project designer Llance Bower, wallpaper was the only feasible solution. “I can’t imagine a trickier applica-
tion,” says Bower. “We had to hit very specific marks on a curved wall with corners and beams.” After the instal- lation, Bower was impressed with the results: “The beautiful finish and vibrant color astonished me. Solid colors are difficult, but there’s no striping or color variation. It holds the ink beautifully. It really looks like paint.”
The theater doesn’t have to wor- ry about damage to the work, which lines a busy hallway. If it’s ever dam- aged, wallpaper can be peeled off and replaced. Plus the prints are odor-free,
making them ideal for the high-traffic area.
The project also met the high-qual- ity standards set by The Old Globe’s executive producer, Lou Spisto. “We
strive for excellence in everything we do, from the lobbies and surroundings to the productions and the actors on the stage,” he explains.
