xpedx Highlights for Show Attendees Connectivity Across Print Platform

“The technologies critical for print- ers to investigate at GRAPH EXPO are systems and equipment that reduce costs and increase efficiency—and that help drive top-line revenue,” said Den- nis Killion, xpedx Director of Market- ing, in Monday’s press conference. During the show, xpedx is demon- strating an automated workflow that links all the key steps from job input to output on a digital press. Attendees can experience the process firsthand, and come away with souvenir posters of themselves output on an EFI wide- format device.

Workflow process The workflow process begins with EFI Digital Storefront and EFI Pace software, then connects to a Kodak Prinergy digital workflow, and finally to EFI Colorproof XF for proofers and wide-format devices. Production continues with the C.P. Bourg sheet feeder, which feeds collated output from any digital press to near-line fin- ishing equipment. Morgana’s DigiFold Pro and Seacap’s mailing solutions are also being demonstrated.

EFI and xpedx also announced xpe- dx will distribute EFI’s Rastek wide -format and VUTEk superwide-format digital printers to commercial and in- plant printers across the U.S. The two

companies also announced the expan- sion of their integration of paper infor- mation into EFI print MIS systems with the addition of EFI Monarch. “We’re excited to expand our rela- tionship with xpedx, in particular to bring our award-winning wide- and superwide-format digital printers to an even broader customer base,” said Frank Mallozzi, Senior VP of World- wide Sales and Marketing, EFI. “We expect to realize a larger market seg- ment of commercial print than with previous partners, while print service providers of all specialties now have access to powerful Rastek and VUTEk printers that can boost their productiv- ity, bring in new clients and increase profits. Alongside of this, we’re pleased to add Monarch integration with the xpedx paper catalog, to fur- ther simplify this critical component in the supply chain.”

Building on the success of the PrintSmith integration with the xpe- dx paper catalog, Monarch print MIS customers now have real-time paper inventory, customer pricing and order management built in to the Monarch software. Killion says xpedx

that merging eCommerce solutions with

PrintSmith and Monarch MIS lowers total procurement costs for a printer's largest spend. Paper and substrates can account for half of a total job cost, and specification decisions directly impact total job profitability, making automa- tion a critical business issue.

The free presentation, “Retooling and Efficiencies in Printing Operations,” sponsored by News & Tech and Inland Press Association, was moderated by Chuck Moozakis, Editor-in-Chief (shown), News & Tech. Guest panelists were Sun-Times Media LLC President and COO Rick Surkamer, FTI Consulting Man- aging Director Ken Harding, Chicago Tribune Manager of Preprint Logistics and Inventory Roy Carlson, and (Toronto) Globe & Mail Project Director Gary Hughes.

LetterGen NV and Eclipse Corporation Form Strategic Partnership

Fujifilm unveiled its 2010 Must See ’em technology—the Digital Inkjet J Press 720—for journalists Monday morning. Introduced at Ipex this past spring, GRAPH EXPO marks the North American debut of the 29", four-up device, to be priced at around $1.8 million. It runs standard offset coated stock in 20" x 29" sheet sizes. Fuji reports Japanese installations and says the J Press 720 will be ready for spring 2011 shipments in the U.S. Since May, engineers have tweaked the drying element and refined the printheads, which should have a one-year life in single-shift operations, depending on usage and coverage, Fuji says. See the J Press 720 in action: Live demos are running five times a day in booth 627.

etterGen NV (booth 752), a document generation manage- ment provider, and Eclipse Corporation, which special-

izes in improving business process automation, announced their partner- ship at GRAPH EXPO. LetterGen is an advanced document generation system based on open stan- dards capable of real-time and high- volume generation. The generated doc- uments are presented as ODT, DOC, PDF, Tiff, JPG and are distributed by fax, email or printer. The company uses a worldwide net-

work of distributors and resellers in Europe.

Distributing in the U.S. “The largest market for document generation solutions, however, is the U.S. market,” notes Luc Vandergoten,

Managing Director, LetterGen. “We are very glad that we can work with Eclipse Corporation, which can look back at many years of experience in this market.”

LetterGen has also signed partner- ships with other resellers. Al Taqnyah, which provides highly integrated solu- tions for customers seeking to automate their business processes, is in charge of the Middle East, North Africa and Pak- istan. S4 Software Solutions, a small Leicestershire-based company special- izing in the production of printed cus- tomer communications in the financial and utilities markets, is heading up distribution in the U.K. LetterGen also revealed its product

was implemented on the Perrit (Neth- erlands) SAAS platform, and will be integrated with Microsoft CRM and Microsoft Axapta.
