IP offerings grew on the manufactur- ing side, and interoperability and stan- dards compliance became a huge dif- ferentiator for manufacturers previously known for proprietary systems. In addi- tion to covering integration in features and news articles, SDM welcomed Dan Dunkel as a columnist writing Integra- tion Intelligence. With an enhanced focus on technology
advancements and integration partern- ships, SDM’s long-standing department Kinks and Hints was revamped, becom- ing Technology Solutions and Skills in January 2008.
In February 2008, the industry navi- gated the sunset of analog cellular service on the AMPS network. The projected ter-
mination of plain old telephone service or POTS lines and the growth of voice over IP (VoIP) usage by customers kept alarm monitoring in a state of change. As the decade drew to a close, social media entered the industry full force. SDM stepped up its offerings with e-newsletters (SDM e-news, the Today’s Systems Integrator e-newsletter, and smartHOME e-newsletter, which focuses on the growing home automation mar- ket), along with tweets on Twitter, blog postings, and a Facebook page. When the recession hit, the multi-fac- eted nature of the security industry paid off. In a struggling economy, government funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 authorized
security spending in many vertical mar- kets, new growth in IP-based products opened new possibilities, home auto- mation and energy management grew, and the explosion of smart phones drove security-related apps into the market. Following a decade of sweeping chang- es, more await on the horizon, and with 40 years of experience, SDM is ready to cover them and offer information to the industry whether through print, online or in-person events, always searching for new ways to communicate and contribute to the industry. ■
