The Royal Academy of Engineering has recently addressed the difficulties that have to be overcome if electric vehicles are to become a viable solution to reducing our carbon emissions. As electricity in Britain is still generated by burning gas and coal, the difference between an electric car and a small, low emission petrol or diesel car is negligible. If we are planning to go all electric, we would have to call on the power sources of at least 10 nuclear power stations or blight our landscape with high cost, low return wind farms. We would also have to overcome the difficulties of charging vehicles particularly for users without off street parking and increase the range of electric vehicles, which at the moment are unacceptably low for commercial purposes. All these obstacles have to be overcome at a time when more demands than ever are being placed on our national power supply. Not so long ago the average kitchen could operate on four electric sockets, now we need at least eight. At this rate we can look forward to a future punctuated by power cuts. The all electric car seems a dream too far and it is time we woke up to this reality.
