Hillie Marshall knows literally thousands of Londoners and has been introducing them to each other since 1989.
Meet Hillie Marshall, one of the capital’s most influential networkers, responsible for introducing London singles too busy to organise their own social diaries. She founded her company Dinner Dates in 1989 and now hosts dinners and social events for 17,000 Londoners including bankers, models, actors and directors. Despite the large number of members on her books, Hillie offers a bespoke service; rather than using computer profiling to match clients, she personally
plans each event, using experience and instinct when deciding who sits next to whom. Members pay a one- off joining fee of £199.75 and are then free to subscribe to as many events as they want. There are up to five dinners a week at restaurants like Quaglino’s, Cocoon and Sugar Hut. Each dinner is attended by up to 32 members with the average cost coming in at £75 including food, drink and service. Hillie greets each guest personally (she knows the names of all 17,000 members) and has a real gift for putting people at ease. She plans tables meticulously, seating members according to their age and interests. Conversation seems to flow as freely as the wine, with many members commenting that they feel more relaxed than at friends’ dinner parties.“All my members are single and would like to meet someone but I never promise to introduce anyone to their perfect match as I think that’s unfair,” says Hillie. However she says that ‘hundreds’ have met and married through Dinner Dates, ‘because social events are a more natural way to meet’. In addition to dinners, Hillie also arranges black tie balls, trips to the theatre, ballet, casino, opera, and holidays. Because all the events focus on networking rather than matchmaking, members expand their social circles whilst meeting potential partners. “Dating is a numbers game; the more people you meet, the more chance you have of meeting someone right for you.”
