Treat your taste buds to a porcini sourdough sandwich at Sporeboys, indulge in the cult cupcakes at Violet (celebs including Kiera and Stella love them) or get a Vietnamese caffeine hit at Ca Phe VN. Eat jellied eels and suet- crusted pies with the Cockney old timers at F. Cooke (above) or sip pear cider with the chilled out crowd at The Cat & Mutton (left).
Fashion & jewellery
Vintage junkies are spoilt for choice. Stylists flock to Paul Goby’s stall to snap up retro bargains – look out for the £2 rail which pops up every so often. Magpies should head for Karin Andreasson’s stall, which sells nostalgic, twenties style jewellery made with antique lace, feathers and diamanté, or Buddug for the cute, vintage inspired enamel pendants.
Art & design
Head to Stella Blunt for a cherry picked mix of 50s-80s furniture. Rebel Rebel, (creators of ‘floral experiences’ for Dior) sell amazing flowers, vases and candles from a hip little shop. Vyner Street, just off the market, is part of East London’s buzzing art scene with galleries such as Kate MacGarry and Nettie Horn showing emerging, edgy art talent.
Outdoors
London Fields (at the top of the market) attracts a diverse mix of Londoners including yummy mummies with prams, frisbee throwers, hippies and canoodling couples. Play ping pong at the popular table or take a dip in the lovely restored 30s lido – locals fought tooth and nail to save it from developers and it gets very busy on hot days. For a quieter dip, drop in early morning.
