Germany-based supplier of automation equipment, Weckenmann Anlagentechnik, is looking for agents in the Middle East to help sell its plastic granulator. The granulator features hydraulics which enables it to open automatically at two levels without the need for an additional tool. This means that blades and screens can be replaced easily, colours and materials can be changed quickly, and any faults that may arise can be eliminated within minutes. In all, maintenance and cleaning can be done without complicated disruption.

For example, Primex Plastics Corporation, one of the leading plastics manufacturers in the USA, needed a high- performance granulator for the treatment of residual material during the manufacture of extruded plastic plates of up to 20 mm. Primex produces semi-finished parts using a diverse range of plastic materials, which include styrene, polyethylene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polypropylene in various formats and colours. In order to ensure the sorting accuracy of the granulator, it was preferable that the granulator could be cleaned easily, thoroughly and quickly at each material changeover. Weckenmann’s granulator met these

requirements precisely. A two-stage hydraulic system allows the machine body to be opened within 40 to 60 seconds at two parting lines without the use of a tool. This facilitates optimal access to the inner area of the machine and, together with a blade presetting device, a quick change of the blade. According to Alan Harding, operations

manager of Primex Plastics in the UK: “We have been using Weckenmann granulators for the past two years now and currently have three systems in operation, which attest to the high efficiency of our company. The quality of the machines is superb and the easy access to the cutting chamber is specially designed for quick material changeover and trouble-free cleaning.” In total, nine of the plastic granulators

are already in use at Primex in the USA and England and Weckenmann is keen to expand their appeal abroad, particularly in the Middle East.

TSM’s optional haul off speed measurement, which can be added to ensure that the weight per length is controlled to the desired specification, also known as yield control. This ensures that the product being produced is maintained at the desired thickness without operator intervention. This mode can be extended to weight per area control through entry. An easy-to-service control module

contains the weigh system electronics. The colour touch screen control panel is extremely user friendly and provides intuitive text prompts. As the job progresses, the operator can view material weights and kg/h throughput, and alarm incidents which are time and date stamped. Furthermore, the electronics design

also allows TSM to get a rapid weight loss measurement from which we can get excellent control response, thus allowing the blender to react almost instantly to any change in line speed or screw speed. Additionally the newly added blockage/ stall feature will detect a stalled screw or material blockage while an encoder will provide instantaneous dosing screw speed data. Moreover, the system also provides inventory reporting by component, total weight summaries and current order reports, all keyed with customer and material codes.
