When I started editing this magazine the first thing that hit me was just how fast the demand for plastic products is growing in the Middle East, especially packaging. Sales of fresh dairy produce in Saudi Arabia alone are growing at a healthy 4.5% a year, according to Germany’s Oystar. And the company is benefiting from this growth — it has recently delivered its eleventh yoghurt pot filling machine to Almarai in Saudi Arabia. In other packaging news, Colines has equipped one of the biggest Iranian producers of cast polypropylene (CPP) film, Plastic Machine Alvan (CMA), with a brand new line and one of the biggest soft drink companies in the region, Sinalco, is satisfied with its SMI bottling machinery installed in Jordan in 2008. Another area of growth is pipe extrusion. And this is thanks to the fact that the region is enjoying

plenty of investment in infrastructure and other construction projects — from governments and the private sector. In this regard, KraussMaffei has received an order for an extra-wide diameter extrusion line from Iranian producer PES. I’ve also found it exciting to see that the plastics supply chain is novel and innovative, with

performance-based products featuring widely. An underground extension at Dubai’s international airport has been sealed with an innovative plastic membrane from Trelleborg while Colourtone has reported that there has been a surge demand for heat-reflective colour masterbatches. In terms of environmental developments, Bio- Polymers is working with the government of UAE to help manufacturers of plastics adhere to a new mandatory standard which ensures that producers of food packaging and plastic bags are producing oxo- biodegradeable (OBD) plastics. Labotek, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of plastics industry ancillary equipment, will exhibit at Plastex 2010 on stand A20 in hall 4. The company provides an extensive programme of standard and centralised systems, all developed on the

basis of the newest technologies and designed to reduce energy consumption to the absolute minimum. It supplies equipment designed for the drying,

transport, dosage and storage of free flowing plastic granules and

the transport of free flowing powder materials. The new Labotek DDM 60-180 is available as a complete

“beside the press” desiccant drying and integrated conveying system, based on energy- and space saving design. The DDM foot print is limited to only 0.6m2. A unique

pressurised dry air conveying system reduces the material volume on the processing machine to a minimum as well as keeping material protected against ambient conditions. DDM is heavily insulated and supplied for drying

temperature range between 60°C and 140°C. A DDM in HT version for drying up to 180°C is also available. All features are controlled via a 6” touch-sensitive colour screen, where all functions — including the Labotek Energy Saving System (LESS) — are integrated. Furthermore the DDM is supplied with a dew point

measuring gate, a separate over temperature thermostat and a 3 phase vacuum hopper loader as standard.

At this year’s Plastex, to be held on May 13-16, 2010, in Cairo, Rinco Ultrasonics, a Swiss manufacturer, will be presenting

its new ultrasonic handheld tacker, model number HT35-2. The new model is an ergonomically-designed manual welding unit with automatic triggering. It is suitable for the welding of synthetic textiles, nonwovens, plastic foils, coated packaging and many other materials. Both the standardised symmetrical horn and the adjustable

flat surface anvil are available with custom-designed knurling, providing a weld surface of approximately 6 x 9 mm. The ultrasonic activation point is adjustable according to

specific requirements. The integrated rotatable transducer protects the device against cable damage whereas tool attrition is prevented by an adjustable mechanical stopper. The hand tacker is operable with an SL35-400/600 or an RL35- 400/600 generator. And a valve box for transducer cooling is available as an accessory.
