A recent extension to Terminal 3 at Dubai International, the world’s fastest-growing airport in terms of customer throughput, has been sealed using 400,000 m2

of Elastoseal

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) sealing membrane supplied by advanced polymer technology group Trelleborg, based in Sweden. The extension, which is expected to open in 2011, is a

huge vault-like structure on top of a 750-metre-long and 250-metre-wide underground basement. The sealing membrane will be crucial in the construction of a tanking system in the basement. The tanking system is necessary to stop seawater entering the basement, thereby keeping it dry.

Without the tanking system, seawater is likely to enter

the basement because the water table in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is very high. Munzer Akbik, managing

director of UAE-based AMC Protection — the contractor selected to construct the tanking system — explained: “The water table in the United Arab Emirates is very high, since the loose sand particles of the desert make it easy for seawater to penetrate the ground, so saltwater is found just one or two metres down. This means that every basement structure must have good protection against water to prevent penetration and to ensure a longer life for the building.”
