When
Go Bad:
ages
A
few weeks ago, my daughter and I spent some time (and
shared a few laughs) looking at my early scrapbook pages.
They feature photos cut with decorative scissors into all
kinds of shapes, stickers placed at random, unfortunate color choices,
and more. The good thing is that the memories are captured, but the
bottom line is this: I really don’t like those pages! I’m embarrassed to
look at them and almost have to be coerced to share them with anyone
outside of my immediate family.
So what’s wrong with the layouts? I spent hours creating them, and I
remember being so proud of my work. What happened between then
and now to make those once good pages go bad?
What happened is this: I gained knowledge of design. That knowledge
has helped me see what went wrong with those early pages and
identify why they didn’t stand the test of time.
These days, I try to employ design concepts in my scrapbooking and
infuse them into the classes I teach. I believe that a solid knowledge of
design can help scrapbookers create pages they not only love now, but
will also continue to love years down the road.
So what are the main reasons that good pages go bad? Let’s explore
some of the most common problems I’ve seen and discuss simple
solutions you can use with your students.
