to the question: “In which
areas should the government

Human resources - or to give
investment, an online poll for Macau Business has found
it it’s other name - people,
registered 29.3 percent of
the answers in the poll. In
second place was transport
and infrastructure, which got
27.3 percent.
Interpreting the results,
Macau Business senior ana-
lyst, José I. Duarte, said:
“The priorities resulting from
the answers received are in
line with what could be ex-
pected from people related
or concerned with business
development in Macau.”
In Duarte’s view, the
fact that HR is on the top of
the list suggests that changes
in administrative procedures
and in labour policies have
failed to ameliorate dissatis-
faction in the business sector.
Reasonable
Professor Eilo Yu, a po-
litical analyst at the Univer-
sity of Macau also describes
the results as “quite under-
standable and reasonable”.
“What most respondents
demand of government is the
improvement of the job mar-
ket, especially in the midst
of the global financial crisis.
However, it is interesting that
almost the same number of
respondents demanded an
improvement in transporta-
tion and infrastructure as the
priority.”
“This could imply that our
economy is not very poor and
the unemployment problem
is not very serious at this mo-
ment. Problems of unemploy-
ment are seasonal and mainly
affected by economic cycles
while transportation and infra-
structure are not,” says Yu.
