Macau is not the first Asian city to
implement full cover Wi-Fi. Taiwan and
Singapore already have several Wi-Fi
covered zones throughout their urban
areas and Hong Kong has free access
points in public buildings.
The creation of a wireless internet
network with global coverage is one of
the ideas included in the Conceptual Plan
for the Urban Development of Macau.
In August last year, the Secretary
for Transport and Public Works, Lau Si
Io, said that the government was study-
ing the matter and had not ruled out the
possibility of pumping public money into
the project.
Old project
This is not a new idea, as it was men-
tioned in September 2006 by legislator
Leong Heng Teng, who at the time asked
the governement a formal question on
the matter.
According to the leader of the Resi-
dents Associations General Union (com-
monly known by its Cantonese denomi-
nation, “Kai Fong”), this was a basic
requirement to cement Macau as an in-
ternational city.
Two months later, the DSRT direc-
tor, Tou Veng Keong, also spoke of such
a possibility.
The official said the executive would
evaluate whether it was possibile to im-
plement a territory-wide service and the
results of the study should be be ready
by the end of 2006, so that by 2007 it
could be established whether the job
should be done by the government or a
private firm.
But since then, aside from the
odd brief mention, nothing has been
made public.
