N answer to a written question from democratic legislator
Ng Kuok Cheong, the coordinator for the Infrastructure
Development Bureau (GDI), Chan Hon Kit, has revealed that
the government’s intention to create new embankments, is still
awaiting final approval from Beijing.
The planned project includes five new lots being created to the
east and south of the Macau peninsula and at northern end of Taipa.
To the east of Macau peninsula, the embankments will be devel-
oped, mainly, into a community zone for 80,000 which will include
homes, commercial centres, green areas and public facilities.
To the south of Dr Sun Yat Sen Avenue, the plan is to cre-
ate three development areas for residences, government agen-
cies, commercial and office buildings, as well as for the units
for the high tech and commercial and industrial sectors. No de-
tails were given on the Taipa plans.

Chan underlined that no casinos are planned for the new
embankments: “To enhance the use of the land, we’ll adopt a
policy of non-development of projects with low occupancy rates
(such as villas),” said the GDI’s coordinator.
The official promised also “an adequate provision of land
which conforms to Macau’s industrial diversification policy”.
Space will also be reserved for public housing. According
to GDI’s coordinator, the developments will roll out in phases
to allow for the city’s sustainable development.
As previously revealed, the total area anticipated for these
embankments was, in 2006, 3.98 square kilometres. However,
after the project was revised by the Central Government, the
area “jumped” to 5 square kilometres and Beijing hasn’t yet
