The North West 2020 Annual Survey Bright year ahead for Wigan Borough

The Galleries Shopping Centre

With major regeneration projects progressing across Wigan Borough, 2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year.

Wigan is conveniently located between Manchester and Liverpool and boasts accessible rail and road links to the rest of the UK.

A focus on quality development, connectivity and investment to boost employment opportunities are priorities for 2020.

And, with around 70 per cent of the borough being green space, including beautiful nature reserves and rich ecology, Wigan Borough truly is an attractive place to live.

In the borough’s major towns, Wigan and Leigh, schemes are underway to boost what is on offer for businesses, residents and visitors.

In Wigan, the council is leading on ambitious plans to revamp the 440,000sqft Galleries Shopping Centre complex to provide a vibrant mix of retail, leisure, residential and cultural facilities. A preferred development partner will be identified later this year, bringing the project to life.

The refurbishment of The Galleries forms a key strand of the town’s bid to the Government’s Future High Street Fund which has successfully progress to full business case stage.

In addition, vacant buildings of historical significance are being bought back into use.

The iconic Wigan Pier is scheduled to reopen later this year – transformed into an artisan food court, events venue, micro-brewery and gin distillery.

Also, funding from Historic England has been secured in principle to establish a Heritage Action Zone in the King Street area of the town centre.

Both schemes demonstrate what can be delivered through strong partnership working between the public, private and voluntary sectors and will be exciting additions to Wigan’s cultural offer attracting visitors from across the region.

In Leigh, the restoration of the historic town hall funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund will finish this summer including a new museum, exhibition space and archives facility.

The town will also be gearing up to host both the Rugby League World Cup and Women’s Euros in 2021.
