The West Country Regeneration in the Forest of Dean

The new build will connect to the existing building through a glazed atrium and includes a multi-purpose four-court sports hall, performance space, party rooms and internal changing rooms. Outside there will be a separate changing block, a secure cycle hub, and 12 electric vehicle charging spaces.

Hartpury University and College are nearing completion on the Innovation, Careers and Enterprise Learning Centre that will sit on the university main campus and provide state of the art facilities for students. This will continue to solidify Hartpury University and College as a world leading educational institute.

Forest of Dean District Council is working with partners, including Hartpury University and College and Cinderford Town Council, to regenerate areas of the Forest of Dean, helping to improve leisure and community facilities, introduce new education opportunities, repurpose vacant buildings and grow the local economy.

A successful proposal was approved in October 2021 for the full £20m available to local authorities in priority places from the Government’s £4.8 billion Levelling Up Fund.

The funding will be used to redevelop a sport and leisure destination at Five Acres, including a satellite site for Hartpury University and College, along with an Innovation, Careers and Enterprise Learning Centre at Hartpury University. The funding will also help regenerate Cinderford town centre by bringing three vacant buildings back into use.

As of February 2024, planning permission has been granted for the Five Acres site, with construction due to begin in Spring 2024. Working with specialists BAM, the build will be completed in phases, with the initial phase re-purposing existing buildings to create new office & community spaces, a gym, a café, and outreach space for Hartpury University.

The work in Cinderford has seen the regeneration of three listed buildings, restoring and updating them so they can be used by the community and businesses. This includes installing a new roof with solar panels on The Wesley, a place used by many community groups, and modernising Rheola House to improve its accessibility and provide new co-working space. Rheola House is now rented by businesses, helping to boost the local economy and offering businesses a central working hub.

The district has also attracted significant investment from private companies such as DEEP, who have spent over £100 million on the Dayhouse Quarry at Tidenham, with further investment planned in the coming years. DEEP are engineering new technologies to improve human access to the oceans, eventually aiming to establish a permanent human residence underwater, increasing our ability to understand Earth’s deep-water environments.

2021 saw the introduction of vertical farming to the district when Jones Food Company invested over £23.5 million to open the “worlds most advanced vertical farm” in Lydney. Their second location, the Lydney site grows a variety of herbs and salads, is equivalent to 56 tennis courts, grows and harvests 24/7 365 days a year, and uses 100% renewable energy.

Details for the Levelling Up Fund projects can be found on the Forest of Dean District Council website.

CARVING PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS WITH APPRENTICESHIPS

Our dedication to apprenticeships often creates remarkable success stories, such as Amy Brown's, a carpentry apprentice. Despite starting with no prior experience in a male-dominated field, Amy's commitment under the mentorship of Tombs Developments, led her to become the first female carpenter to win the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year title at the 2023 National Apprenticeships Awards.

Amy's story showcases the transformative power of apprenticeships, breaking barriers and fostering a skilled workforce through education and industry partnerships.
