Swansea Arena

This project will include the creation of small units for local traders at the Victorian railway arches on The Strand in the city centre. An elevator from The Strand to High Street will also be introduced and work will be carried out to significantly improve the look and feel of The Strand close to its arches and tunnels. Retail pods and better lighting will be put in place in the tunnels.

Other elements of the overall project include the installation of pontoons on Swansea’s River Tawe to boost opportunities for river travel and water sports, while better linking the city centre with landmarks including the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site where further heritage buildings will be restored for business use.

The council is also making the most of its Shared Prosperity Fund allocation from the UK Government, with a number of schemes in the pipeline to bring empty city centre units back into temporary or permanent uses.

All these projects follow-on from other major schemes completed in recent years that meant Swansea was in a strong position to quickly bounce back from the economic impact of the pandemic.

They include the city’s new Copr Bay district where the 3-500 capacity Swansea Arena has now been open since March 2022, attracting over a quarter of a million visitors in its first year of operation.

Castle Square

Also now open as part of the Copr Bay development are a 1.1-acre coastal park, a 33-apartment block run by the Pobl housing association, and an iconic new bridge over Oystermouth Road that links the arena with the city centre. Set above a car park, the coastal park is one of the largest green roofs in Wales.

Last year saw further considerable progress in Swansea too, with examples including world-famous Welsh drinks specialist Penderyn opening an operational distillery and visitor centre at the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site.

This followed an extensive restoration project on site, spearheaded by the council.

Swansea is truly a city that’s going places as we seek to celebrate our industrial and coastal heritage while creating a more vibrant, innovative destination that’s fit for the future.
