BBC STUDIO B: BACK TO THE FUTURE
When BBC Director General Tim Davie wanted to reinvent the BBC One news bulletins to sit alongside the big shiny floor shows like Strictly Come Dancing, Studio B in New Broadcasting House got a new lease of life. “We needed to crew it using the News channel model,” says BBC News’ Chris Cook. “The only way of doing that was to put some form of robotics in. They needed to be flush to the floor, so we used Electric Friends. The studio features full-length LED screens on the back walls and across a mezzanine catwalk. As well as a touchscreen, there are two ‘towers’ front and back, again bearing LED screens, a phone-like metaphor linking to the BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, and the BBC News app. “Studio B is augmented reality capable; we had the first use of AR for the Coronation, where we put the crown in front of the presenters,” says Cook. “We’re bringing in new technologies and new ways of telling the story that will shine with viewers.”
media ingest and for file ingest, as well as Wolftech, the ‘story-centric’ media management system.
“We've deployed Wolftech alongside iNews,” he says. “Avid iNews remains the tool for running order functions and for output functions, while Wolftech has become our primary tool for what we would describe as planning resource management. We see it becoming a tool for recces, risk assessments, and for centralising a shared platform.”
“A good graphics system in a newsroom remains invisible to the end user who can focus on the editorial task at hand.” Boromy Ung, Senior Director at Ross Video
GRAPHIC CONTENT
ITN has also overseen a revamp of graphics for Channel 5; there are new players among the big names in this space too. One such is Traco GFX which offers Viz Pilot template integration with Avid’s MediaCentral | Cloud UX. “We’ve reinvested in Viz, so we have an all-new graphics platform, and we’re using Traco to integrate Viz with Media Central,” says Roberts.
“As well as moving to Premiere we are looking to deploy more motion graphics from Photoshop and After Effects to give us even more templated graphics,” he adds.
