PRODUCTION
NATIONS AND REGIONS
My perception is that in the majority of cases, what broadcasters
are doing is moving existing successful shows out. What I would quite like
to see is some of our regional labels launching those successful shows. TANYA SHAW

strategy from the broadcaster that they want to increase factual entertainment in Manchester, or they want more history out of Scotland.” Better, she believes, to be ready with a good team in different locations. “If we’ve got talent all over the place, then we can always respond to the briefs.” Of course, there are different stories
in each nation and region. Bristol has had its own natural history
boom over the last five to ten years, driven by international investment. But it also has a broader talent pool in specialist factual. Stephen McQuillan launched Bristol-based Atomic earlier this year to capitalise on this rich seam. “The big motivation for me was to get
those really good people back into specialist factual. People who quite often have to get the first off peak train from Temple Meads to London and sleep on a mate’s couch.”
Atomic is helped by Channel 4’s recent appointed of a history commissioner, Emily Shields, in its Bristol office. “It is a great thing to have a Channel 4 office on your doorstep,” says McQuillan.
Northern Ireland has had a drama boom, fuelled by Game of Thrones, Line of Duty and Bloodlands. “In factual it’s really sparse, a bit of a Gobi Desert,” says Bell at Tern. Sunday Morning Live and daytime series Critical Incident are returners for Tern
in Northern Ireland, but the indie is something of an exception. “Why aren’t there more hospital shows or big precinct shows out of Northern Ireland? It’s not that difficult. There are big schools, big hospitals and there are lots of good indies, but there’s just a block, there’s no urgency to commission.” The increased reliance on Zoom is to blame to some degree. It’s rare for someone to commission on a video call. Curley at Pact encourages those more capital-centric commissioners to get out more. “Broadcasters, go and explore! A gatekeeper stops people coming through the gate, but exploring is fun and exciting and you might find something new, original and distinctive.”
