THE MODERN NEWSROOM

SKY NEWS: NEW NEWS VIEWS

“We feel screens are an incredibly effective storytelling tool,” says Sky News’ Ben Fisher. “At our Sky News Studios, we use LED walls as the ‘set’ background but also as a way of illustrating graphics, data, hero imagery and guests. We like to use zones which can be used for multi-platform broadcasting - we have just launched a vodcast studio to enhance the audio offering and bring our podcasts to life. “Our Glassbox screen is the focal point of the Studios. It really comes into its own on big data stories and election coverage,” he continues. “We use touchscreen technology and telestration (Tactic Draw) for our data and forensic storytelling, particularly alongside Google Maps, which was a TV first.”

“In Millbank, we also have a screens area for data and analysis for purely digital video content,” he continues. “Meanwhile Studio 6 has a full VR set using Unreal Engine to provide daily data screen presentation – along with a touchscreen facility.”

He adds: “Mosart will remain for our highest profile output, in terms of curating studios and BBC Breakfast and One, Six, and Ten, and the main video offering on the BBC News Channel, but it's certain that there are more quick and easy systems that are coming along that may be being used.”

“Our users will be able to access our content in more places, using more tools than ever before.” Jon Roberts, Director of Technology, Production and Innovation at ITV

At ITN, which produces news for ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, a recent massive phase of development has included an extra newsroom for ITV and the new channel ITVX, while for Channel 4 News, there’s now a standalone newsroom in Leeds.

“The big technical piece at the core of those projects is the production management system and the News Room Computer System (NRCS), where we migrated ITV, Channel Four and the news and archive teams across to the latest versions of Avid and iNews, all leveraging Avid MediaCentral,” says Jon Roberts, Director of Technology, Production and Innovation at ITN. “By using a combination of remote extension
