NEWS VIRTUAL GLASS OF WINE

If you’ve tuned in to any of the recent BFE VGOW events, both virtual or actual, you might have heard from Derry Girls editors Nigel Williams and Lucien Clayton, Barry Alexander Brown, long-time collaborator with director Spike Lee, or legendary editor Frances Parker. As a director, Brown’s documentary The

War at Home was nominated for an Oscar; he recently wrote, directed and edited feature Son of the South. Working with Spike Lee, he was also Oscar-nominated as editor of BlacKkKlansman. He edited many of Lee’s best films, including Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X. “I don’t argue with directors,” said Brown to the BFE audience. “I’m not going to put an obstacle in the way of an idea.” He talked, from his editing tent in Provence, where he lives half the year, about getting under the skin of performance, going with his gut. “I might ask myself, ‘Whose scene is this?’ Because

Band of Brothers and has gone on to edit TV phenomena including Game of Thrones and The Crown. She described taking performances to the next level: “If you have somebody who is not really very fluent and is extremely nervous, and doesn’t hit the dialogue points, you can really help those performances.” Being a woman in a predominantly male world hasn’t fazed her. “I’ve never felt that being a woman has held me back.” In June, Cut Above award-winners
