BASF AND ADIFO SOFTWARE PARTNER ON OPTIMIZING FEED FORMULATION, SUPPORTING A MORE SUSTAINABLE ANIMAL
ANPARIO INVESTS HALF A MILLION POUNDS IN FACTORY UPGRADE TO SUPPORT
SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Anpario plc, has invested £500,000 in a series of upgrades within its UK-based production facility. The project, which began earlier this
year, involves three stages. A new transfer system between the mixer and packing system on one of the key production lines; the installation of a fully automated pallet processing system and the installation of an innovative wrap round gantry which will also increase storage capacity at the site. “The aim of the project is to further en-
hance operational efficiency whilst reducing the company’s carbon footprint,” explains Shane Bailey, Anpario’s operations direc- tor. “For example, the new transfer system has reduced energy consumption when transferring products from the mixer to the packer by up to 90 percent and halved the amount of waste produced from operation of that line within the factory.” “Not only does the upgrade reduce
environmental impact, but it is also much more efficient, with the upgraded line run- ning at up to eight times faster than the previous system,” says Mr Bailey. “The addition of the fully automated
pallet processing system is one of a range of measures and improvements at the plant over the past five years which have focused on increasing the output capacity for our products, including Orego-Stim and Anpario’s acid based eubiotic (ABE) range, in order to meet on-going sales growth”, explains Mr Bailey. The investment has resulted in other
benefits for Anpario, including building on quality assurance goals and improved health and safety of the operations team. The project also supports the aspirations of the company’s ‘Green Team’ comprising individuals from each department who share the companies ambition to minimise impact on the environment. “Anpario is fully committed to reducing
the environmental impact of our operations and is working towards key milestones to deliver what our employees, customers, and stakeholders expect from us. We will achieve these targets thanks to the passion of our staff to reduce and conserve energy within the factory, and thanks to the ongoing investments aimed at making our operations environmentally sound and sustainable for the future”, concludes Mr Bailey. The final stage of the project is
scheduled for completion by the end of 2020.
PROTEIN PRODUCTION BASF and Adifo Software will launch a new digital solution for the animal agriculture value chain by integrating sustainability analytics powered by BASF’s AgBalance® Livestock project into Adifo’s BESTMIX® feed formulation software. BASF’s sus- tainability analytics enable the industry to dynamically assess the life cycle en- vironmental impacts to make animal pro- tein production more sustainable. Adifo’s BESTMIX®
software allows nutritionists
and formulators to manage and optimize nutrition and cost attributes of feed and ration formulation. By integrating BASF’s sustainability analytics into BESTMIX®
,
customers along the animal agriculture value chain will be able to strategically manage and optimize feed formulation based on nutrition and cost while taking environmental sustainability aspects into account. “This partnership will significantly
advance feed formulation,” says Daniela Calleri, Vice President Business Manage- ment BASF Animal Nutrition. “While cost is still relevant, sustainability has become an important driver for the animal protein sector. This joint solution by BASF and Adifo enables customers to improve their formulations for least environmental im- pact and offers substantial opportunities for the value chain.” BASF has a long history of collabora-
tion with partners from the poultry, pork, dairy, beef and aquaculture value chains globally to drive sustainable solutions from farm-to-fork. The BASF digital sus- tainability analytics innovations couple nearly twenty years of life cycle sustain- ability work in the feed and animal protein industry with leading science-based digi- talization capabilities. “We recognize the importance of
sustainability as one of the game chang- ers in the animal feed sector and other nutrition industries for the coming years,” says Gerard Marneth, CEO at Adifo. “With this strategic partnership with BASF, we want to continue our path of innovation in BESTMIX®
software by allowing our
customers to include sustainability as a parameter into their formulations and ra- tions. Extending insights and minimizing environmental impact by using the en- hanced BESTMIX®
will allow the industry
to grow jointly towards a more sustainable future.”
Capabilities to improve will be inte-
grated to devise the most sustainable for- mulations within defined cost tolerances. BASF’s AgBalance Livestock® functionality within BESTMIX®
project will provide the ability to rapidly and dynamically as- PAGE 56 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 FEED COMPOUNDER
sess feed formulation scenarios and as- sociated life cycle sustainability impacts within BESTMIX®
. BASF and Adifo Soft-
ware are currently finalizing the function- ality via customer pilot projects and target to commercially launch this innovative so- lution to the market in early 2021.
VALIO AND DSM ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION AGREEMENT TO DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE DAIRY
PRODUCTS VALIO and Royal DSM have signed a collaboration agreement to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of dairy production in Finland. VALIO’s milk ranks among the cleanest in the world. VALIO aims to make its dairy value chain carbon- neutral by 2035. This collaboration with DSM is one of the steps to reach this ambition. Over the past 10-years, DSM has developed a feed additive, named Bovaer®
,
which consistently and effectively reduces enteric methane emissions from cattle by ~30 percent. DSM is working with partners from the dairy and beef value chain to prepare for market introduction. The activities include joint trials to confirm effectiveness in local farming systems, co- development of low-carbon dairy products, and establishment of business models. The collaboration with VALIO is a significant step towards market introduction. VALIO and DSM collaborate in an end-
to-end demonstration scenario to develop, build and test Bovaer®
in the VALIO
production and marketing systems. The activities in this trial are amongst others tracking animal and milk performance parameters and calculating the eco footprint reduction. VALIO will conduct quality and processability assessments to qualify Bovaer®
as a feed additive for use
on VALIO farms. Juha Nousiainen, head of the climate
program in VALIO, is excited about the development. “DSM has invented a promising solution to drastically improve the GHG footprint of cows. This solution for reducing enteric methane will be an important building block to reach our ambitions for carbon neutral milk. We are looking forward to the collaboration.” Bovaer®
is a feed additive for cows
(and other ruminants, such as sheep, goats, and deer) researched and developed over 10 years by DSM. Just a quarter teaspoon of Bovaer®
per cow per day suppresses the
enzyme that triggers methane production in a cow’s rumen and consistently reduces enteric methane emission by approximately 30%. The feed additive Bovaer®
therefore
contributes to a significant and immediate reduction of the environmental footprint of meat, milk and dairy products. Bovaer® awaits EU approval.
